Why a New City Hall?
Keep Our First Responders Safe

In the event of an earthquake, a new, seismically sound City Hall and police facility will ensure that the people we depend on to respond in an emergency will be able to help us, do their jobs to manage the crisis, and keep the core functions of the City operating. We’re all safer when our first responders are safe.

Since the construction of City Hall in the early 1960s, the seismic building codes in Oregon have changed in response to what scientists have learned regarding earthquake hazards in the Northwest. Now, new buildings that house or deliver emergency services, such as police stations and hospitals, must be constructed so that they remain operational during and after a seismic event. This impacts the building’s structure as well as the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

Increase in Oregon’s structural code requirements for seismic design since 1945. The code requires Essential Service Facilities to be 50% stronger than standard buildings.
